My board and I are working this year to do some emergency leadership succession planning. The scenario: if our executive director suddenly becomes incapacitated (sudden death or other accident) what happens? A lot of the information about running our camp is in my head so this is an attempt to put down instructions and knowledge on paper. Has anyone done something similar and if so, do you have any resources that might help us in this process?

  1. Wow. This is pretty forward thinking. I don't have any experience with this. This is a good question. You will have to share your information with us. Are going to Ashville?

  2. Chad, My board has asked for the same thing. I went to Lutheran Services of America and they have an actual booklet on succession planning. It isn't designed for emergency, but I think the principles are the same.

Also we have a 3 Vice-President model of leadership and the board asked me to have a plan in place if we lost one of these people. I have authority over hiring other staff, and the board doesn't need to approve the plan, but I think it is fair for them to make certain that I have a plan in place.

I meet with my Executive Committee on March 12 to work on this. I'll let you know what comes of this at that time. Keith Johnson

  3. Chad,

you might look for a book called "Succession, Are You Ready" by Marshall Goldsmith. I saw it at Barnes and Noble. It is more about planning for your replacement and not the emergency situation, but maybe it has some good ideas for you.
